Wayne Rooney Top Scorer

Manchester United star, Wayne Rooney, is set to be the top goal scorer of the season after scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at Old Trafford.

In the game, Rooney scored his 99th goal for the club. After 34 minutes of play, the centre forward kicked the ball into net after his initial header from Nani’s cross, bounced back off the post and into his path.

Rooney was clearly the star performer and was frightening with the ball; he constantly made smart runs when his colleagues had control of the ball.

The midlands visitors played defensively from the beginning, giving the Red Devils plenty of space midfield. Rooney caused panic within 12 minutes of the game, as he hit a dipping 20 yard that was acrobatically knocked over the cross bar by Hart.

Rooney’s fantastic chested through ball flick set up Michael Owen, a new signing to Man U, with a one on one chance with Hart in the 83rd minute.

Manchester United’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, told MUTV, “Wayne took his goal well, the header was a good one and then he reacted the right way – he was quick to follow up. That gets him on the road to what we hope will be a very significant total for us this season.”

“It’s good if you can get two or three of your players to score more than 20 goals. Wayne’s capable of that – we’re not asking him to do the impossible.”

Wayne Rooney is at 13/2 with canbet to be the Premier League’s top goal scorer this season.

Premiership Top Goal Scorer Betting Preview

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Sports betting online is now so easy! Simply sign up an account deposit some money and your off! All major bookies offer a wide range of combination bets, and as the Premiership gets closer bookies are holding bets for the top scorer. Here a quick look at the golden boot favourites:

With the Premiership’s opening fixtures beginning on the 16th August fans are getting excited around the country. Last season United winger Ronaldo won the golden boot and will be looking to repast this success once again if he stays at United. The big four clubs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United all have deadly strikers and each has the ability to score plenty of goals.

Pre season favourite is Fernando Torres (4/1), who will be hoping to help Liverpool challenge for the title. The Spaniard had a stunning debut season and will be looking to build upon that by winning the golden boot whilst helping Liverpool win some silverware. With strike partner Robbie Keane signing for the Reds, they promise to score plenty of goals between them.

Arsenal will be looking to Emanuel Adebayor and Van Persie for their goals. Adebayor (8/1) had a great first half of the season last year, however failed to find the back of the net as the season drew to a close. Van
Persie has had numerous seasons plagued with injury and will be determined to show the league his real quality (16/1 Betfred).

Chelsea have been hit with the news that Drogba (8/1 bet365) will miss the start of the season due to an injury. Nicholas Aneleka has been in stunning form pre season and Scolari is reportedly very pleased with the Frenchman. If Aneleka (16/ holds down a regular place in the side he can score loads of goals and has plenty of experience.

For United they will be hoping to Ronaldo repeats the form he showed last year. It will be difficult has he was exceptionally good, but he will no doubt score plenty and will create opportunities for Tevez (25/1 Ladbrokes), Rooney (18/1 888sport) and maybe even Berbatov (10/1) if he signs for the champions.

Robbie Keane 7/1 to be Liverpool’s top scorer

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Liverpool today unveiled Robbie Keane as their new signing, bagging him for £18m plus another potential £2m depending on performances and appearances.

The big-money transfer has been met with some criticism, with Rafa Benetez changing his usual policy of buying younger players with a potential for profits upon resale. At 28 years old, Keane will be worth a fraction of the £18m fee paid in a couple of years time, and he will need to perform otherwise Benetez could find himself under major pressure.

Some say Keane may have been the final piece of the jigsaw for the Reds to win the Premier League for the first time in 19 years, but I can’t see him making much of a difference, no matter how formidable the striking line-up is now.

Sky Bet have already opened a number of betting markets on how he will fare, making him odds of 7/1 to outscore Torres and be the side’s top scorer. They also think he is likely to get around 10.5 goals, with odds of 5/6 for him to get either side of that in the Premier League this season.

Keane is just 2/1 to score on his debut against Sunderland on the 16th August with the online bookmaker, and odds of 6/1 to get booked in that game. Longer-odds bets include him to score a hat trick on his debut at 25/1, and 28/1 for him to be the Premier League’s top scorer in 2008/09.

The 2/5 on offer for Torres to be top scorer for Liverpool, despite being short, seems like great value, even if he is half as prolific as last season. It may also be worth backing Keane to net two or more goals at Sunderland at odds of 10/1.

Premier League Outright Betting and Odds 2008/2009

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

As we count down to the start of the Premier League season 2008/2009, the transfers are hotting up and we are getting a clearer picture of what the squads may look like at the start of the season.

With big names signing new contracts, and the main players looking likely to stay for at least another season, Chelsea have now become joint favourites with Manchester United at odds of 2.9 on Betfair. United have seen their odds get longer over the summer as they have been at the centre of the Ronaldo transfer saga, made no major signings, sold players, and lost their assistant manager.

Getting Scolari as their new manager is also a major coup for the Blues, who will be expected to bring in the big trophies in the very near future.

There has been significant amounts bet on Arsenal and Liverpool to lift the Premier League trophy, with the betting around odds of 6.00 and 8.4 respectively. Whilst they may seem unlikely to break into the top two, Arsenal are huge favourites to top the League at the end of August at 3.5. Manchester United have surprisingly long odds of 9.00 and may be worth betting on, despite their tricky early run.

Unlike last season, there has been little talk of another team breaking into the top four, with Tottenham being the favourites to do so at 6.4. Their odds are likely to slide even further if the sales of either Keane or Berbatov do leave White Hart Lane, and this bet can be layed all day.

Premiership Title – Betting Preview

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The premiership season is fast approaching and its time to bet on the team you think will take the title. Will it be one of the big four, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool? Or will a new team emerge as premiership contenders?

I’m going with Chelsea this year. With new manger Luiz Felipe Scolari at the helm and Deco in midfield I think they will have what it takes to win the title. Last year was close and Chelsea, under Avram Grant, were a side who showed the potential to take United all the way next season. Under Scolari they will play, attractive attacking football but my only concern is their defence. Scolari is not known for his defensive qualities and I think could be a potential problem for big Phil. Chelsea are priced at 15/8 by Paddy power to finish top of the table.

United (5/4 with Bet365) will without question be challenging at the top and if they keep hold of Cristinao Ronaldo they will be favourites to retain the title. Assistant Manger Carols Queiroz looks to be leaving the club for the Portuguese national side. He will be missed and was a huge factor in the success story of Sir Alex Fergusons team last season. If he leaves some believe Ronaldo will head for the exit as well, due to two’s strong relationship.

Arsenal will be looking to improve on the last couple of seasons after having a great start last year but then struggling in the later stages. If Emmanuel Adebayor leaves for AC Milan, the gunners will need to buy a striker before the season ends. They lacked a consistent goal scorer last season and will need to find some quality upfront if they want to mount a serious title challenge this year.

Liverpool will always be mentioned at the beginning of the season but have consistently under performed. Even with Fernando Torres scoring 33 goals last season they were unable to challenge Chelsea and United. If they can get Villa they will surely be mounting a stronger bid next season. I fancy Liverpool this season and priced at 7/1 by 888sport and I think they are worth a bet. Pundits tip them every season and they have always failed, but they are definitely improving so this could be there year.

If you fancy a wild card I would go with either, Portsmouth at 500/1 (Bet direct), Tottenham at 80/1 (Betfred) or Man City at 200/1 (Blue Square). All have decent sides and cash to spend over the summer.

Football Bet does well at Euro 2008!

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Football Bet had a very good Euro 2008, picking the winners before the tournament! Despite people continually knocking them back because of poor performances in recent tournaments, they were worth backing with a clearly strong squad. There were profits in the final with a 1-0 winning goal margin and Spain win backed.

The only real losses came when some of the big names went crashing out to the likes of Russia and Turkey, Italy and France in particular saving the bookies some big payouts.

Looking forward the upcoming competitions, we have a few interesting pre-season friendlies, however these are not smart betting opportunities!

The Premier League is now just a month and a half away, and we will turn our attention to that. Manchester United will start the season as favourites at around 1.64 whilst Chelsea will be second favourites, currently at 2.2 on the exchanges.

The other two of the big four, Arsenal and Liverpool, are 5.2 and 7.8 respectively. Unless either of these teams make some major signings in the transfer window then surely they cannot expect to challenge the top two from last season.

We can always expect United to be in the hunt, but many will be tempted by Chelsea with their new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who already has a few new names to play with including Portugese duo Deco and Bosingwa. The 9/4 available at Betfred is our top Football Bet ahead of the season, however this may change before the start of the season!
